Dialysis is a treatment that cleans waste products out of the blood once your kidneys no longer can. Through dialysis, you can live a long and high quality life.
There are two types of dialysis:
Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and both have home and in-center options as well as multiple methods.
- Hemodialysis (HD) cleans the blood using a filter called an artificial kidney.
- Hemodialysis can be done in special facilities called dialysis centers or at home.
- Peritoneal dialysis (PD) cleans the blood using the lining of the abdomen, called the peritoneum, as a filter.
- Peritoneal dialysis is typically done at home.
